Another shot of the old farmhouse, apparent from the same day in July, 1961. The front of the 1949 DeSoto DeLuxe is clearly visible, between the pecan tree and the pear tree.

Grandma and Grandpa Crum (Oren and Margaret) visited us on Dad’s (Walter’s) 35th birthday, June 20, 1961. Mom (Joyce) is with Dad. In front are all 4 siblings: Pat, Mark, David, and Joe (with trusty Daisy BB rifle). The beagle is Lucky.

Grandpa (Oren) with Elizabeth Peden At Emma Robbins, Upland, Ca Aug 1961
Emma Gurley Peden Robbins (http://www.padenfamily.org/getperson.php?personID=I36096&tree=peden1) was Oren’s aunt. Clara Peden was Grandpa’s mother’s maiden name. Emma would have been his mother’s sister. And Elizabeth would have been their half-sister, born to her father’s (John Clark Peden’s) second wife, after her mother (Oren’s grandmother) had died. Emma was born May 4, 1874, and her mother (Cynthia Elizabeth Mathes) died April 4, 1875, before Emma was 1 year old. John Clark Peden married Anna Catherine Beuhler (from Switzerland) soon afterward, so Elizabeth (b. 1884) was raised with her half-siblings. Emma would have been 10 years older than Elizabeth, her younger sister. I’m pretty sure that Grandpa had not seen these relatives in many years, possibly this was the first time.

Mark and David in the tree, Joe and his BB gun on the ground, by the old cherry tree in the yard of the farm house. Fall 1961.

Another pic of the McConnell family in November 1961. The lady and girl in the back must have been relatives; I don’t recall their names.

November, 1961. Ocie, Sharon, Jim, and Ed McConnell. I think this was taken at their home, when they lived near us.

Summer of 1961. Taken at my Great Grandpa Hockersmith’s home in Indiana. He’s on the left. Grandpa Crum is helping Pat get on Charlie, the horse. Joe and David are on him already. Dad is on the other side holding the reins, and Mom is watching.

David on Charlie, with Mark, Pat, and Joe watching along with Dad and Great Grandpa Hockersmith. Summer, 1961 on my great grandparent’s farm.

Summer 1961 – Joe, David, and Mark with Great Grandpa Hockersmith and Great Grandma Hockersmith., at their Indiana house. We didn’t visit them very often, sad to say. They were my Grandma Offutt’s (Daisy’s) parents.

July 1961. My great grandparents Crum. Mable C. Schlosser Crum and Benjamin Oren Crum (92). I think this was taken at their home in Brownsburg, IN. Mable was his second wife. His first wife, Clara Peden Crum, was my grandpa Crum’s mother, who died July 7, 1908. Grandpa (Oren) would have been about 13 years old when his mom died.

Double exposure… on the Left is Grandpa Crum on the beach at San Simeon, CA Aug 1961. I think the other part of the pic is another of the same beach..

Summer 1961. Two pictures for the price of one. David, Pat, Joe, and Mark standing in our back yard on St. Joe Rd East.

July 1961 – the 4 of us on the picnic table behind our house. So overexposed that I didn’t take the time to clean it up.

Summer 1961. Another shot of the boys on old Charlie, with Dad, Pat, and Great Grandpa Hockersmith. Just realized that Dad is 35 in this picture. My youngest son, Andy, was 35 this year.

Christmas at home. 1961. Mark appears to be armed in this picture. Dad has that “Christmas morning after the presents are opened” look… 🙂

Another picture from Grandma Crum’s, 1961. Mark, David, Pat (with doll) and Joe. From the earbud stuck in my ear, I would guess this is the year that we received Windsor transistor radios for Christmas. I still have mine.

Another shot of we boys on old Charlie, with Great Grandpa Hockersmith, and Dad holding Pat. Fall 1961

August 1961. Slide was labeled “Christian home of aunt Alice Peden”. Lucy and Alice Peden were two of my Grandpa’s (Oren) aunts. They were his mother’s sisters, and they apparently lived together in California, and never married. Lucy died in 1951. Alice apparently died June 26, 1962, less than a year after this was taken, at the age of 101.
I think this must have been the nursing home where Alice spent her last days. I’m working on getting a little more information about this place; I have been told that it is still there.
Here’s an image of the grave stone for both Lucy and Alice: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/26185950/mary-alice-peden
